The Ghosts of Monte Cristo
Monte Cristo is one of the few remaining ghost towns in Washington. Located in the rugged wilderness of the North Cascades, this once thriving town was an important event in Washington's history. Monte Cristo served as a mining town over 100 years ago. A railroad was built in 1892 that began in Everett, carrying passengers and cargo on a four-hour journey to the developing town. Churches, schools, saloons and the occasional brothel were constructed and by 1897 Monte Cristo was a full-fledged mining town. Floods, landslides and a depression proved to be more than the town could handle and was abandoned in 1907. Step back in time as we explore the remnants of a town that was once home to over 1,000 of Washington's most adventurous spirits.
