Captain Vancouver's Deception
Deception Pass is one of Washington State's most dramatic water and landscapes. To the south of this east-west passage is Whidbey Island, named after Captain George Vancouver's assistant Joseph Whidbey. To the north is Fadalgo Island. This narrow, steep sided passage can be a wave-filled tidal ride or a casual paddle past towering bird filled cliffs. We start our paddle at Cornet Bay, Deception Pass State Park, the one time home of the Samish, a coastal Salish tribe. During the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corp built roads, trails, buildings and bridges to develop Deception Pass State Park. After leaving behind the beach and the CCC's hard work, we explore Canoe Pass and Deception Pass. The 2-day trips explore as far southeast as Hope Island where the trip will spend the night. All trips return to Cornet Bay with a few stops along the way.
