What's New with Anew

Spring is in the air - I think?

Although the northwest has been unseasonably cool this spring it can't last forever even if it may feel like it.   All the signs that spring is truly just around the corner are here; many birds have returned, flowers are pushing their way up, and the daylight is long.   Now all we need is sun and you too will feel the spring fever.

Fly-fishing season is here in full force

With this in mind we've added a few new trips to this years fishing season.   Join us for a day on Fish Lake for a little east side sun or catch us on Skate Creek near Mt. Rainer for a trout school and river clean up.

Notes from the Field

Yakima River Fly Fishing

The continued unseasonably cool weather has been a fisherman's dream.    Cool, clear water due to little snow pack melt and often overcast drizzily skies have combined to create some of the best spring fly fishing conditions I've ever seen. The Skawala stoneflies have continued to be active through April and the March brown mayfly hatch has of recently becoming quite predictable around 1pm.   As of this weekend we have started to see more and more Blue Wing Olives and the occasional real small caddis.   The last two days of warm weather are wreaking havoc with the water levels and clarity but with most of the lowland snow already melted off, I don't see the blow up lasting long.   With reports of Salmonflies just starting to show in the lower river and the knowledge that the mothers day Caddis are just around the corner I can not be more excited for what's to come.   Get your dates on the calendar.

Experience Says

Make your own energy bars

Tired of paying up to $2.00 for expensive energy bars?   Then try making your own bars before you hit the trail this spring.   Here is one recipe that is sure to fuel you up:

Ingredients

    • 1 cup dark raisins
    • 1/2 cup golden raisins
    • 1/3 cup butter or margarine (butter gives better flavor I think)
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar or 1/3 cup your favorite honey (which will make them gooier)
    • 1 egg
    • 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
    • 1/4 cup toasted wheat germ
    • 1/2 cup molasses
    • 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
    • 1 cup sliced almonds (optional)
    • 1 cup quick cooking oats
    • 1/2 cup skim milk
    • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
    • 1/2 tsp table salt
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Directions

    1.    Chop raisins (using a food processor if possible and one of those little 2 cup processors are great right now).
    2.    Cream (do not melt the butter) butter, sugar, molasses and egg.
    3.    Combine flour, dry milk, wheat germ, baking powder, baking soda,
    4.    Salt and ginger.
    5.    Blend into creamed mixture with skim milk.
    6.    Stir in oats, raisins, and half the almonds (if desired).
    7.    Pour into greased 13x9x2 inch pan and spread evenly.
    8.    Sprinkle with remaining almonds (if desired).
    9.    Bake at 350 degrees for approx. 30 minutes.
    10.   Cool in pan and cut into 1x4 inch bars.
    11.   And if you like add some cocoa powder and spirulina mixed on top
    12.   Mist with water and let dry
