Guides represent the face of Anew Outdoors and are key to developing positive customer relationships and memories.  To assure we provide the very best guides we require Wilderness First Responder training, a food handlers permit, a minimum of 2 years experience, and 40 hours a year of continuing education.

John Schaefer is a 30 year old native of Washington, with a Bachelors degree in Outdoor Recreation from Western Washington University.  While working in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington, John has compiled over 5,000 hours of instructing and guiding in the disciplines of sea kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, fly fishing, ski touring and snowshoeing. When John is not in the field instructing, he's in the field with friends.  His personal time has yielded such adventures as sea kayaking around Washington's Olympic Peninsula, landing the elusive steelhead with the fly rod, climbing Yosemite National Park's El Capitan, kayaking the Colorado's Grand Canyon, and skiing off the summits of many Washington volcanoes.

Jonathan Adams is a 30 year old Washington native.   His admiration for backcountry travel and adventure has been the main focus of his personal and professional life. Beginning in the Boy Scouts, where he received the Eagle Scout award and continuing through his college years as a student of Geography at Central Washington University, Jonathan has developed his knowledge and skills as a backcountry traveler.  He has traveled to Europe and Canada as well as taken several extensive road trips through out the western United States pursuing his passion for outdoor recreation and enlightenment.   His post college education continues to be a priority.   Jonathan has taken the ski guide and ski mountaineering courses through the American Mountain Guides Association, American Avalanche Association level 1, and Canadian Avalanche Association Level 1 courses, and is a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).   In addition to guiding with Anew Outdoors Jonathan is employed as a professional ski patroller, commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska and Carpenter.   His personal interests include ski touring, rock and alpine climbing, sea kayaking, backpacking, surfing and traveling.

Adrienne Sherred's passion for the outdoors started at an early age, spending her summers camping and fishing with her family.  Since then, she has devoted her life to providing opportunities for others to experience all that playing outside has to offer.  She received a Bachelor Degree in Outdoor Recreation from Western Washington University and is a Wilderness First Responder.  She spent a season working for North Carolina Outward Bound as logistical support and instructed climbing and ropes courses.  She spent 2 years as a climbing ranger on the slopes of Mt. Baker where she helped develop protocol and guidelines for future rangers to follow.   Adrienne has spent the past 4 years as a climbing ranger on Mt. Rainier where she assists in Search and Rescue, helicopter operations and providing information to the public.  She spends her winters ski patrolling at Stevens Pass Ski Area .  Her personal accomplishments include completing a 50 K trail run, multiple ski descents and traverses in the Cascades and Alaska and trekking in Peru and Bolivia.

Michael Schaefer , 28, has been climbing for over half of his life and guiding since the age of 18.   He has spent the last 6 years as a guide for The Yosemite Mountaineering School, which includes guiding numerous ascents of El Capitan and Half Dome.   While living in Yosemite he has pioneered many new rock climbs with difficulties up to 5.13 and accumulated over 20 ascents of El Capitan.    Climbing has taken Mike to Alaska, Patagonia and this summer he will be traveling to Pakistan to attempt a new route on Uli Biaho.   While not guiding or climbing he spends his time on the beaches of Mexico surfing or backcountry skiing everywhere from Washington to California to Colorado.

 

 

Frewin Hermer graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation in 2000. Since then he has worked for numerous outdoor companies including North Carolina Outward Bound, Hurricane Island Outward Bound, The Boojum Institute, and YMCA Camp Orkila.  While working as a sea kayak instructor in the San Juan Islands, Canadian Gulf Islands, Outer Banks of North Carolina, and the Bahamas Frewin has compiled countless hours of leadership experience and expertise.  Most recently he was the associate program director for the Boojum Institute in Joshua Tree, California helping direct youth outdoor adventure programs all throughout California. Personally, he has completed a 60 day sea kayaking trip down the inside coast of Baja from San Felipe to La Paz to raise money and awareness for Ovarian Cancer. Currently, he is getting a masters in counseling in Seattle, Washington and working with Anew Outdoors.

 

Steve Weileman has been paddling a kayak since 1989 when he first moved to the Pacific Northwest. Having been raised racing Hobie 16' catamarans as a youth in Florida's panhandle, he quickly traded sail for paddle. "It didn't take me long to fall in love with kayaking. As a matter of fact, after my first 3 day lesson, I had purchased the instructor's boat, paddle, car rack and all the gear! I was hooked."

Steve has been and continues to guide clients professionally as well as instruct classes. Steve is certified with the American Canoe Association as an ACA Open Coastal Instructor, the BCU (British Canoe Union) as a 5 Star Sea- Kayaker trainie, the WMI (Wilderness Medical Institute) as a Wilderness First Responder, and LNT (Leave No Trace) as a LNT Trainer.

Steves explorations have taken him to the Queen Charolette Islands, Vancouver Isands, Washingtons coast and Newfoundland waters.

 

Jason, or ‘Kiwi’ Goldstein has been a kayak instructor and guide for over twelve years. His career began instructing white water kayaking in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he completed a Bachelors in Outdoor Recreation Management at Lincoln University. Jason has since settled in the Puget Sound, a mecca for sea kayaking and gateway to the Pacific Northwest coastal wilderness. He has taught and guided for many outdoor pursuit organizations in the region, and more recently became the founder and owner of “Global Adventure Guides, LLC” – a kayak business offering trips in both the Pacific Northwest & South Pacific. Jason is certified by the American Canoe Association as an ACA Open Coastal Instructor, and as a Wilderness EMT through the Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI). A passion for adventure and photography has drawn him to Essex Explorers, a talented team, dedicated to experiencing and documenting adventure exploration and discovery.
