Advanced Kayak Instruction

Both of the following classes or workshops are geared toward the intermediate / advanced paddler who is anxious to increase their paddling skills and comfort level in a more challenging environment or for those who might be interested in becoming a guide/instructor themselves.

A roll is not necessary to attend either class, but it is recommended. Although it isn't on the curriculum we'll gladly set some time aside to help with anyone who is anxious to begin rolling or looking to polish and 'bomb-proof' their roll.

In order to insure a quality program and allow for 1 on 1 time between instructors and students, the class size for both programs are limited to 6 students.

$485 per/person

Comprehensive Coastal Workshop (CCoW)

Held at Cape Disappointment - June 29th ~ July 1st; August 24th ~ 26th

This location offers a variety of coastal environments and much of this workshop deals with the surf zone.

Comprehensive Current Workshop (CCuW)

Held at Deception Pass - June 1st ~ 3rd; Sept 28th ~ 30th

This location focusses on a swift current environment and learning / practicing eddies entries, and all the concerns of swift current sea-kayaking.

Both workshops cover the following curriculm:

  • Advanced Paddling Strokes - We'll do a quick review on the fundamentals to make sure that everyone is on the same page, then we'lll cover bow rudders, hanging draws, crossover strokes, and the art of linking strokes to increase efficiency.

  • Rescues/Recovery/Tows - Multiple solo and assisted recoveries will be covered, as well as when it would be appropriate to use each. We'll use scenarios based on real life examples drawn from Jason and Steve's experience as kayak guides.

  • Navigation/Trip Planning - Here we'll introduce navigation (lines of position, natural ranges, piloting, etc.) in the classroom, then practice the techniques in demanding conditions as well as a night paddle. We'll have each student plan and execute a leg of the trip. We'll also cover how to plan for a multi-day trip including planning a menu and food handling techniques.

  • Weather/Tides/Currents - This is obviously a big part of trip planning/navigation, but warrants a separate chapter. We'll cover how to interrupt a NOAA weather forecast as well as how to use wind direction, clouds, and barometer to create your own 24 hour forecast. Also we'll look at how to read tide/current tables and how to create your own for areas not covered.

  • Logs/Waivers/Liability - An often overlooked subject we'll provide some ideas and examples on how to rate and document a paddle as well as waiver and liability issues.

  • Kit - Everyone loves this part of the workshop. We'll cover some of the basic safety gear and their uses as well as some of the fun 'toys' of the sport.

  • Communications - Here we'll deal with the "do's" & "don'ts" of using a Marine VHF radio; which channels are available for certain types of communications, the proper way to hail a vessel, calling a "Mayday" or "Pan". We'll also cover paddle signals and other non-verbal communication for times when distance and noise prevent audio commands.

  • Group Leadership - First we'll identify and discuss the different leadership styles as well as when each is appropriate and how to transition between styles as conditions dictate. We'll also discuss techniques and tips on how to deal with 'challenging' group members. Then everyone will have an opportunity to practice group leadership in various scenarios and conditions.
